What can you do to stop a police record from impacting your life?
A police record can seriously affect your way of life. But it’s not only when you’re found guilty of a criminal offence that you get a police record. Even when you're innocent, a wrongful arrest, police questioning, or a caution can be enough to give you a police record for decades. But having these records and other data deleted from the Police National Computer is possible.
What are police records and data?
Even if you’re innocent of any wrongdoing, having a record detailing any police activity can make your life difficult in more ways than one. It could prevent you from getting a job that requires a DBS (Disclosure & Barring) check and can cause future travel problems, especially for visas or emigration matters.
But most people think you can only have a police record if you’ve been found guilty of committing a criminal offence. Unfortunately, this isn’t true. Even if you’re innocent, your record, permanently held on the Police National Computer (PNC) until your 100th birthday, will contain every police interaction, including helping police with enquiries, being questioned, or being released under investigation.

In the UK, the PNC and other databases will hold local and national records of information and data relating to any police activity, including criminal convictions, official cautions, warnings, or reprimands. Any official data they might hold can also include DNA samples, fingerprints, mobile phone data (including text messages, emails, and app information), photographs, CCTV footage, and more.
Can anyone have their police record deleted?
You can apply for early deletion of PNC records which will see information gone for good. But only certain people are eligible to have their records deleted and you can only apply if you meet specific criteria. You can apply for record deletion if you’ve been:
Issued with a penalty notice for disorder (PND)
Issued with a final warning as a juvenile
Arrested but not charged with a minor offence
Cautioned as an adult
Arrested and charged with a ‘qualifying offence’* but were not convicted
* A ‘qualifying offence’ includes murder, rape, assault, robbery, burglary, and sex offences.
However, you won’t be eligible to apply for record deletion if the following apply, including if:
You’ve been convicted of an offence in court
You’ve been issued with a conditional or absolute discharge in court
Your record is held open for intelligence purposes
You’ve been arrested, and the case is still under investigation
