What happens if you face false allegations for a crime you didn’t commit?
Facing false allegations and accusations for a crime you didn’t commit can be a distressing and traumatic experience. But why do innocent people get arrested and wrongly accused of a crime in the first place? There’s a wide range of reasons why this might happen, and when it does, our experienced defence solicitors are on hand to help you get the justice you need, day or night.
What are false allegations?
A false allegation is a claim made by someone accusing you of committing a crime or an offence you haven’t done. The claim is untrue and cannot be supported by facts or hard evidence.
False allegation cases surrounding any crime are worrying and stressful for anyone who’s wrongly accused. While these can happen for several reasons – including mistaken identity or distorted memories, or revenge, creating sympathy, or the need for an alibi – you can feel angry or scared. At the same time, the effort required to clear your name of any wrongdoing can severely affect your personal and professional life.

What if false allegations are made against you?
If you have false allegations against you, your first instinct might be to confront your accuser, especially if you know them. But facing them, asking them what cause they have for accusing you, or trying to persuade them to drop the charges is not the right thing to do. Any situation can escalate, and it could play into their hands, leading to problems for you further down the line.
Instead, you should seek professional legal advice from an experienced criminal law solicitor, like MJR Solicitors, before an arrest is made. False allegations need to be taken seriously and without underestimating the potential consequences of what you’re being accused. And taking legal action to protect yourself as early as possible will give you the best defence you can get.
Having good legal representation is crucial to getting through a complex legal process. We’ll be able to get the right information from the police and identify any flaws in their evidence – without this, you could feel pressured and confused and potentially incriminate yourself.
While this process will undoubtedly be uncomfortable and distressing for you, keeping your emotions in check in a hostile environment is essential. When you’re under scrutiny, however baseless, we always advise you to stay calm and keep a cool head – and we’ll be with you at every step.
