Criminal & Misconduct Investigations & Proceedings
As a police officer or special constable, being investigated, arrested, or charged with misconduct or any criminal offence can cause embarrassment, distress, and anxiety for you and your family. MJR Solicitors has a team of specialist police law solicitors who work closely with and act on behalf of the Police Federation of England to provide legal advice, support, and defence for all its rank-and-file members.
How MJR Solicitors Can Help You
As with every area of law, police law can be complex, challenging, and far-reaching. Individual officers and special constables within the police service often need to make difficult operational, heat-of-the-moment decisions on duty and off. And sometimes, these decisions can become subject to public scrutiny and even legal proceedings.

Such is our experience in this area, our legal expertise allows us to advise and defend members of the police service on a range of proceedings, from criminal or gross misconduct allegations and civil proceedings to appeal tribunals, giving you the best chance of helping you to escape sanction and be reinstated. Here are the key areas where MJR Solicitors have the expertise to help you:
Police on-duty representation
The Police Federation fully fund any representation of its members. This funding is available for all on-duty criminal investigations, proceedings, and accusations of gross misconduct. As a police officer or special constable, MJR Solicitors can advise and represent you on a range of on-duty incidents, including:
- Criminal allegations and proceedings
- Regulatory misconduct allegations and proceedings
- Road traffic offences
- Death or serious injury to someone in police custody
- Other allegations or charges relevant to on-duty service
Police off-duty representation
Together with on-duty criminal and misconduct proceedings, MJR Solicitors also offers advice, representation, and defence services if you’re involved in an incident while off-duty
Our team can meet with you before any police interview taking place under caution or before any court appearance. If a gross misconduct allegation notice has already been served to you regarding an off-duty incident, we can give you legal advice before any interview with your constabulary’s professional standards department or the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Police key witnesses
If you’re involved in Post Incident Management (PIM) process following police contact, the incident may have resulted in death or serious injury, uncovered failings in the command chain, or caused danger to fellow officers or members of the public.
During the PIM process, key police witnesses and suspects in the incident will be identified. If you’re identified as a key witness, you’ll need to give an initial account of events. Following this, you’ll be asked to make a detailed statement, a full account as a witness. Before making this detailed statement, we can advise and accompany you to any interview.
Police appeal tribunals
If you want to appeal any decision or sanctions made against you from a misconduct hearing, you’re entitled to a right of appeal at a Police Appeals Tribunal. You can ask to appeal if you think:
- The decision against you was unreasonable
- Evidence may have been overlooked, which could have affected the decision
- There was a breach of Police Conduct Regulations procedures
MJR Solicitors have years of experience and an in-depth understanding of the disciplinary and appeals process. We can be with you all the way to represent, advise, and support you while putting together the strongest case possible on your behalf and putting forward strong ground for appeal.
